In January 2012, the FDA ordered that up to three years of data about the effectiveness and safety of vaginal mesh, also known as transvaginal mesh, must be provided from over 30 vaginal mesh producers in the United States. This order comes after a response to the FDA’s revised safety communication from July 2011 about the use of vaginal mesh. The revised communication warned that there severe complications have been seen in the implantation of vaginal mesh.

Vaginal mesh is a surgical mesh that is implanted through the vagina. The common use for these types of surgical mesh is to support the internal organs. Surgical mesh can be found as either non-absorbable synthetic, absorbable synthetic, biologic, or composite. There are two common procedures that women undergo that require vaginal mesh implantations: pelvic organ prolapsed (POP) and stress urinary incontinence (SUI).

In both conditions, a pelvic mesh is commonly used in surgical options to help correct the problem. It was first used in the 1950’s to treat abdominal hernias. Use expanded in the 1970’s to include it in the treatment of POP and SUI. There was an increase in the use of vaginal mesh in the 1990’s for surgical treatment of POP and SUI.

Since the release of the revised safety communication, there have been a multitude of lawsuits brought against the manufacturers of vaginal mesh. Many of the cases name all manufacturers of vaginal mesh in the lawsuit. One noted company is Ethicon, a subsidiary of Johnson and Johnson, who has gone through procedures to prevent the release of the requested data from the FDA.

Many cases are being condensed into larger action suits by courts due to the large number of suits being brought against the manufacturers of vaginal mesh.
